When Maya reached home, she locked the front door, removed her shoes, and placed her bag beside the sofa. The apartment felt wonderful still. No forklift alarms. No landline. No voices calling from the warehouse.
She changed into a soft cotton sweater and loosened trousers. In the kitchen, she poured a glass of water and stood beside the counter without drinking it. Her shoulders ached from holding tension throughout the day.
