That distinction changed her. She began speaking more confidently. She joined engineering project teams. She asked questions during lectures instead of keeping them inside her head. When classmates discussed different solutions, Maya joined the argument.

Sometimes she was wrong. Sometimes they were wrong. Sometimes everyone needed to go back to the calculations. Nobody needed to shout.

That mattered.

The engineering building became one of her favourite places. Maya often stayed there late. Earlier in her life, staying away from home had sometimes been a form of avoidance.

University changed the reason.

Now she remained because she wanted to finish a design. She wanted to understand a difficult calculation. She wanted to improve the report. She wanted to work. She stayed late in the library because she wanted to finish her work, rather than because she feared going home.

Structural engineering attracted her most. She liked the idea that mathematics could become something physical. A beam could carry a load because somebody had calculated it correctly. A column could support several floors because an engineer had understood the forces moving through the structure.

Steel, concrete, loads, connections, deflection, stability, safety. These concepts fascinated Maya.

There was something powerful about looking at a building and understanding that its apparent stillness depended on thousands of calculations. She chose structural engineering.

Soon she was spending long evenings in the library arguing over load paths and structural equations with classmates. The group included men and women from different backgrounds. Nobody cared who was supposed to be better at mathematics. The calculation had to work. That was the standard Maya understood.

University reinforced that expectation. The admissions office had judged her application against academic requirements. Scholarships were awarded through formal criteria. Lecturers assessed her assignments through marking standards. Laboratories gave every student access to the same equipment.

Maya liked that system. She believed effort and ability could produce results. So she worked hard. Her marks remained strong. By her final year, she was performing near the top of her cohort.

Then came the project presentation. More than one hundred people filled the lecture hall. Academics sat among industry representatives. Students waited for their turn. Maya stood near the front holding her notes.

Years earlier, speaking loudly inside her own home had made her nervous. Now she was about to speak into a microphone. Maya stood in front of a lecture theatre presenting an engineering project to academics and industry representatives.

Her project appeared on the screen behind her. She began. Her voice remained steady. She explained the engineering problem. She described the assumptions. She walked the audience through the calculations. She defended the design choices.

When someone asked a difficult question, Maya listened carefully and answered. She did not shrink. She did not apologize for knowing the material. She had done the work. The confidence came from preparation.

When the presentation ended, the audience applauded, Maya returned to her seat. She felt something she had worked years to earn.
